What is the difference between functional and procedural programming methodologies?

In my college programming course, I worked on a project to build a simple calculator. For this project, I used functional programming principles. I created functions for each operation, like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Each function was designed to take inputs and return outputs without modifying any state, making the code easier to understand and debug. This approach helped me see how functional programming emphasizes immutability and pure functions. By the end of the project, I was able to not only complete the calculator but also clearly explain the advantages of this methodology in terms of code reliability and reusability.

During my time volunteering for a local charity, I helped organize a fundraising event. We used procedural programming concepts to manage tasks like budgeting and scheduling. I created a checklist that outlined each step in a sequential manner, similar to procedural programming where tasks are executed in a specific order. This method was effective as it allowed the team to follow a clear path from planning to execution. We achieved our goal of raising funds efficiently, illustrating how a procedural approach can streamline processes and ensure that all necessary steps are taken in the correct order.
