What are the key components of RESTful API design, and why are they important?

During my final year project, I worked on a web application that allowed users to track their daily tasks. I applied RESTful principles by defining clear resources such as 'tasks' and 'users.' Each task had its own unique URL, and I used standard HTTP methods: GET to retrieve tasks, POST to create a new task, PUT to update existing ones, and DELETE to remove them. This approach not only helped in organizing the application but also made it scalable and easy to maintain. I learned that by adhering to RESTful design, the application became more intuitive for users, as they could easily understand how to interact with it.

While volunteering for a local non-profit, I contributed to building an event management system. We used RESTful API principles to allow users to create and manage community events. I helped design endpoints such as /events for listing all events and /events/{id} for accessing specific event details. By ensuring the API was stateless, each request contained all the information needed, improving performance and reliability. This experience reinforced the importance of clear design in creating user-friendly applications, as it enabled our volunteers to easily navigate and utilize the system without technical difficulties.

In my first job as a junior developer, I was involved in enhancing an existing e-commerce platform. We focused on optimizing the RESTful API used for product listings and user accounts. By implementing pagination and filtering in our GET requests, we improved performance significantly. Additionally, I learned how to document our API effectively, which helped other developers understand how to integrate with our system. This experience highlighted the real-world impact of well-designed RESTful APIs, as it ultimately led to a better user experience and increased customer satisfaction.
